The ecosystem

We are committed to transforming the rail and metro signaling industry. Through the Open Signaling Initiative, we work for a shift towards using open standards, loosely coupled components, and COTS hardware. We offer services, tools, and solutions that enable operators and integrators to build modern, future-proof signaling systems based on those principles.

By collaborating under this shared vision, we aim to foster innovation, increase interoperability, and lower the cost and complexity of signaling projects.

Feel free to contact any of us in the list below. We will help you to build your open signaling system together with partners in this initiative.

Contributors to open signaling

Hardware Supplier

Hardware Platform Supplier

Provides e.g. standard PLCs suitable for SIL 4 projects that require CENELEC EN 50126. Platforms are generic products that come with firmware, operating systems and communication abilities and only require application software to be added.

Application Software Supplier

Develops the specific logic and algorithms that implement the safety-related functionality of the system, and ensure its correctness through thorough V&V and QA processes. Application software can be manually entered or based on code generation from a Generic Application and application data.

System Integrator

Leads system-level design and manage the integration process. Usually acts as prime contractor, coordinating project office, and handling additional tasks such as cyber security expertise and safety engineering.

Independent Safety Assessor (ISA)

Assesses the safety case and provides an independent judgment. The providers of ISA services can usually also offer validation services and safety engineering, but not in projects where they have the ISA role.

  • NEAT

NEAT provides HW&SW Intellectual Properties (products and reference designs under license), as well as highly-specialised Engineering Services for the implementation of mission- and safety-critical applications (up to SIL4).

NEAT’s capabilities cover the design and development of computers, SW applications, libraries and tools, requirements management, architectural and system design, including the preparation of the full documentation package required by applicable standards and regulations.

  • Universal Signalling

Universal Signalling Ltd (USL) is a UK-based company, founded in 2022. USL is developing an innovative interlocking architecture using COTS hardware that enables digital signalling to be deployed in weeks, not years, and offers open interfaces to other systems.

The architecture has various functions that could support wider solutions, such as low-cost vehicle localisation, speed, and integrity supervision certifiable up to SIL-2.

  • Amey

Amey have UK product acceptance and a SIL 4 safety case to European EN standards for the COTS Hima PLC family with deployed applications in interlockings, level crossings, safety transmission and control systems with integrated condition monitoring.

Our safety assurance includes application design guidelines, testing and maintenance specifications with associated training and certification for signalling designers, testers, maintainers and operational signallers.

  • Schneider Electric

    Modicon M580 Safety – SIL4 Railway certification

Modicon M580 Safety offer has been successfully assessed by TÜV Rheinland up to SIL4 regarding Cenelec EN50126/EN50128/EN50129 for the Railway market.

This certification will help to support our customers in Railways Signalisation systems with best in class Industrial Safety controllers.

  • Pilz

Pilz PSSrail is a safe, modular control system for railways, certified up to SIL 4. The system is compatible with EULYNX and supports the digitalization of railway infrastructure.

Thanks to its open, flexible, and standardized design, PSSrail meets both current and future requirements for trackside control.

  • Cactus Rail

At Cactus Rail, we combine decades of proven design and turn-key expertise in TMS and interlocking integration, regardless of type or age. With an unwavering commitment to safety and reliability, we are continuously evolving our capabilities.

Leveraging advanced tools such as Prover software, we ensure that our future solutions meet the highest safety integrity standards for infrastructure owners.

  • Prover

Prover offers a Signaling Design Automation process, where a Generic Application is developed in a model-based workflow and application software for the target platform is automatically generated based on application data.

Prover can prove that the application software is correct thanks to Prover Certifier, which has been certified for CENELEC SIL 4 applications by TÜV Nord.
